I am an unashamed fanboy and this is my blog. If I think its cool, it goes in the blog. I hope to reach a few similarly mutated individuals.

Interesting Idea - Corporate Charter Schools
For over a decade US high-tech companies have complained that the US is not turning out enough Engineering talent to meet their needs. This forces them to look elsewhere for the properly trained people. Why not turn to intellectual farming? Using the rules for Charter Schools already in place, perhaps it is time for high tech companies to get into the education business and create specialized schools geared toward training the next generation of engineering graduates.
These schools would have easy access to equipment and a large knowledge base via guest lecturers from the corporation running the school.
Of course there would be a concern about training a student only to lose them to another organization but people tend to gravitate toward the familiar so I would think that students who attended a school run by a particular corporate entity would probably look there first for employment.
These schools would be funded just as other charter schools are, so would not prove to be a drain on corporate finances.
It seems to me like a win-win for everyone.

WOOT! Dark Sun is Coming Back
WOOT! Wizards of the Coast just announced that their Dark Sun campaign setting is coming back in 2010. I wish I had been at GenCon for this announcement. I know that some folks hated Dark Sun, but I always enjoyed the aesthetic feel of the campaign, especially the fantastic art produced by the artist Brom.

The Essence of the Role of a DM
This post on the Dungeon Mastering Blog blew me away. It was a suggestion on how to improve your gaming session in 12.5 seconds. I believe that it distills the true role of a DM in any game.

New DM trick made my games instantly better
I recently tried something new. Before a game I tell players:
“We are building a story together. You can make assumptions about the situations and encounters your characters are in and my job is to go along with whatever you’re assuming unless it directly contradicts something that was already established.”
I tried it twice so far and it has a major effect on my session. Players stop asking the DM for trivial information. If they’re in an inn, they assume there are sharp knives nearby if they need one. If they’re in a mansion, they assume there is a expensive art pieces and tapestries if that’s needed for their next smart surprise move to work. Whenever they need something from their environment, players are now free to add to the world, build the story, and move the plot forward without having to double-check minor details with the DM.

Concealed Weapon Alert
Apparently, a man from Houston was arrested and searched a total of five times at two different holding facilities before it was discovered that he had a pistol in his possession. It seems that the fellow was so large that he was able to conceal the weapon within his Jabba-folds. Ewwwwww...!
